The building of the Renano Aquaduct in Calderara di Reno began in the 1930s and continued for twenty years until the latter half of the 1950s. It brought drinking water to 13 municipalities in the lower plains of the Bologna area and was a huge project for the time, serving a catchment area of 55,000+ hectares and a population of 79,000 inhabitants in mostly rural areas. However, it did not last long. Discontinued because of changes in the system of water provision, it was gradually dismantled, leaving only the Rationalist central building with the original mechanical equipment today.
