The Teatro Alice Zeppilli is located inside the town hall of Pieve di Cento (BO). The use of a town hall room for theatrical and musical performances began in 1785, was interrupted in 1852 and resumed in 1856 after a redesign by Antonio Giordani that produced a typical Italian theatre with simple but elegant decoration, a horseshoe-shaped cavea, three rows of boxes and a stage curtain, now used as the backdrop, featuring Aesop talking to the shepherds. Closed in 1929, it was unused for several years. It was used by the regime during the Fascist Era for events and later as a camp by German soldiers.
Restoration work, in 1981 and 2001, brought it back to life, creating 145 seats. Today it is used for theatrical and musical performances, conferences and shows. The rooms also house the Museum of Music, with a focus on the life of the opera singer Alice Zeppilli (1885-1969) to whom the theatre is dedicated, and documents and musical instruments from the lute makers’ workshop.
