A splendid example of late 18th century architecture, the Municipal Theatre of Piacenza was designed by architect Lotario Tomba. Its original neoc-lassical style was mitigated by the rebuilding of the façade in 1830 by Alessandro Sanquirico who, inspired by Giuseppe Piermarini’s Scala Theatre in Milan, created a double portico covered with a balustraded terrace beneath an Ionian colonnade that supports the tympanum with the shield of the city.
The present interiors were created in the mid-1800s, adding a Romantic touch to the theatre hall with red velvet and golden ornaments. The splendidly decorated foyer leads to the theatre with glass doors and mirrors framed in carved gold leaf. The theatre can seat 1,075.
