The Forte Albertino di Vinadio (CN) is an imposingly large fortress, the only one in Piedmont that encloses an entire village: 1,200m of tunnels are distributed over three storeys, with a maximum height of 18m and a depth at the base of over 1.5m.
Commissioned by Charles Albert of Sardinia, building work began in the summer of 1834 and lasted for 13 years, employing approximately 4,000 workers who came from all over Northern Italy. It was never used in battle as the early wars of independence focussed the Savoys’ attention on the Austrian front. On 18 September 1862, 400 of Garibaldi’s followers captured in the Battle of Aspromonte were taken to Vinadio. Their imprisonment in the fortress lasted 24 days.
The territory of Vinadio, which extends from the Maritime Alps to the Cottian Alps, contains numerous sites of environmental interest where it is possible to be surrounded by nature in splendid settings, far from the usual sites of mass tourism.
