The State Medical Library was established in 1925 to support medical research in Rome’s Policlinico Umberto I hospital. In 1975, it became one of Italy’s 46 state public libraries, maintaining its original mission of documenting Italian and foreign scholarship in the fields of medical, nursing and pharmaceutical sciences.
The Library collections include modern publications, manuscripts, incunabula, 16th and 17th-century books, and some exceptionally rare editions. Since 2016, the State Medical Library has been located within the modern building of Rome’s National Central Library, built in the mid-seventies. The Reading Room offers users a welcoming and very well lit space, designed according to the most up to date library criteria: 48 study spaces, 9 metal shelves containing the room’s bibliographic material, 8 computer workstations for consulting the catalog and online databases, and 4 showcases for displays and exhibitions. It is delimited by the circulation desk, behind which there are employee offices, the rare books room, the loan office, the periodicals office, and the gallery from which there is a complete view of the environments below.
