Below the hilltop Convent dell’Annunziata, Lake Aiso, also known as the Lake of the Abyss or Hell, is an artesian body of water about 2km north of Bevagna (PG), set in an outstanding rural landscape typical of the Umbrian Valley, an area with several similar lakes. Circular in form, it has a diameter of approx. 22m and is 13m deep. Its unusually clear waters are a popular destination for scuba divers and also used for irrigation. Its flora and fauna are typical of lake wetlands, with the addition of several exemplars of oaks. The lake is equipped with a picnic area, walks and bicycle trails.
The area is classified as a Site of Community Importance (SCI) and is subject to environmental restrictions.
