The administrative capital of the region of Valle d’Aosta, Aosta is set in a valley encircled by high mountains, a crossroads of Alpine passes that lead to France and Switzerland such as the Little St. Bernard Pass, the Great St. Bernard Pass and the mont Blanc tunnel.
A transit point on the via Francigena (ancient pilgrim route leading to Rome), Aosta is also known as the Alpine Rome as it conserves part of its Roman perimeter wall and an archaeological area that includes porta Praetoria, the arch of Augustus, the criptoportico forense (underground walkway beneath the forum) and the iconic Roman theatre, still used today for cultural events and performances.
Traces of the Middle Ages can be seen in the Cathedral and Collegiate of Sant’Orso, including 11th century frescoes in the cavity beneath the original roof, the mosaic flooring and the wooden choirstalls. The Early Christian Basilica of St. Lawrence, beneath the deconsecrated Church of St. Lawrence, is also of note.
Piazza Chanoux is the heart of the city and the departure point for some of its main thoroughfares. Not far from the piazza, a Neo-classical building houses MAR – Museo Archeologico Regionale (Regional Archaeological Museum) which displays archaeological collections and temporary art exhibitions.
Skiing areas are in easy reach from Aosta: the cable car takes just 17 minutes from the train station to the Pila ski resort.
