The Cryptoporticus Forense is a monumental building below ground level, accessed from the garden that opens onto piazza Giovanni XXIII in Aosta; it is one of the best conserved Augustan archaeological sites. Its original function is still not entirely clear, it certainly played a structural role in attempting to contain and regulate the sloping ground but it has also been suggested that it became an important reference point for both liturgical and political life at the time.
It has a quadrangular structure divided into three parts with a horseshoe layout and internally split into two barrel-vaulted naves which are supported by a line of pillars built with blocks of plastered tuff rock and lit by basement windows which also provide ventilation and keep the temperature inside the building constant throughout the year.
