The truogoli of Santa Brigida, located in a square between via Balbi and via di Prè in the heart of Genoa, are some of the few public washhouses to have survived the advent of washing machines. The Balbi family contributed to their construction in 1656 when the city was ridden with plague in order to provide the inhabitants with plentiful, clean water piped from the Santa Brigida river which once flowed here. The washhouses are in perfect condition today, thanks in part to a wrought iron roof.
