Villa Hartungen was built in 1903 in Jugendstil, or art nouveau, style entirely in wood by Dr. Christoph Hartung von Hartungen (1849-1917) who used it as a summer residence. It is located on the sunny slopes of valle d’Ultimo with a view of the Ortles Group mountains. This is one of the most remote corners of Alto Adige, a valley that was even hard to reach on horseback until the early 20th century. Once a sanatorium, the building was abandoned after WWI.
Later the house was restored. There is a large seminary room on the ground floor near an abundant kitchen and spacious antechamber. A terrace lies to the west. There are austerely decorated bedrooms with balconies on the first and second floors. Today the building is used as a “natural health retreat”.
