Fishing huts

Description

The fishing huts of Emilia-Romagna, known in Abruzzo as trabocchi, can be found in the Po Delta, in the Comacchio valleys in the province of Ferrara.
The fishing huts were created by the populations of the valley, river and sea for shelter and fishing activities. They are simple structures: the materials, construction techniques and locations all demonstrate how their use was essential to the survival of the people who lived in these lands. With large nets rising above stretches of water in the various wetlands, they are part of the regional cultural heritage and have characterized its landscape for many centuries.
Present since the 15^th century (with the first records in the 1800s), the fishing hut has evolved with the local population; passing from a form of daily subsistence and non-professional fishing for personal use and small-scale commerce to providing wartime refuge and today's recreational function.
Just less than a thousand in total, these atmospheric places of tradition and popular identity preserve and bear witness to the culture of water in the seas, valleys, lagoons, piallasse, rivers, canals and streams. Completely authentic and composed of unmistakable shapes with colours and lights, fishing huts are the distant relatives of lighthouses, guardians of the sea par excellence. At dawn or dusk, on sunny days or in the mists, watching the nets being hoisted offers a spectacle both bucolic and elegant. They have always represented the perfect synthesis between solitary and social life, uniting flavours, traditions and solidarity, where groups of birds stalk the newly raised nets filled with fish collecting the catch faster than the fishermen.
