Description

Built in the 1st century BCE to celebrate the gens Gavia, one of the most important families in Roman-era Verona, the stone block Gavi arch is a rare example of an honorary arch.
Originally located on via Postumia, it was demolished during the Napoleonic occupation and rebuilt with the original stones in 1932 on corso Cavour. The arch was built from blocks of Veronese white limestone, probably from the nearby Valpantena quarry, carefully squared and regularly placed. Its construction required the use of opera quadrata isodoma technique, with four load-bearing walls, in addition to four central arches, while the Corinthian columns are mostly decorative.
