The Foschini rotunda is an integral part of the 18th century municipal theatre of Ferrara which, positioned on the corner of two streets of equal importance, required an efficient way to tackle its setting. The rotunda met the needs of urban flow by making it easier for carriages dropping the theatre patrons to turn and leave quickly.
Sympathetic restoration, to celebrate the bicentenary of the Foundation, has brought back the original beauty of this architectural element. On the left of the arch linking the rotunda in via Martiri della Libertà is the elegant formal staircase designed by Foschini and built in later years, that leads to the sale del Ridotto, a hall which is now connected to the theatre building but was originally completely independent.
