The Enel power plant in Ligonchio, municipality of Ventasso (Reggio Emilia), is a building of architectural value, an artifact of industrial archaeology as are the pipelines and related works.
The hydroelectric plants in Ligonchio produce energy by exploiting the waters of the Rossendola and Ozola rivers. The waters of their tributaries are also collected in canals, tunnels and pipes. The two water collection basins in the area are located at Presa Alta (1,229m), and Ligonchio (1,000m) with a loading tank in Tarlanda, (1,207m). Water is forced from the tanks and carried to the power plants, operating the turbines. Approximately 56,500 MWh of electricity is produced each year.
The hydroelectric works and plants built by Enel between 1920-1930 are today important historical-architectural heritage, which have become an integral part of the landscape. The Ligonchio power station and the Ozola dam are in operation 24 hours a day.
