Description

The 70-metre-high faro della Vittoria (lighthouse) in Trieste was built atop the Austrian-built fort Kressich (1854) on Gretta hill 60 meters above sea level. The panoramic viewpoint offers a breath-taking view over the Gulf of Trieste.
Designed by the architect Arduino Berlam and inaugurated in 1927, in addition to its primary function of illuminating the gulf of Trieste to aid night navigation, it is also a commemorative monument dedicated to the sailors who died in WWI.  An inscription on the base reads: "Shine and remember those lost at sea (MCMXV - MCMXVIII)".
The lighthouse is clad with blocks of stone from Carso and Istria, and topped by a dome housing the lantern which has an average range of 30 miles. Atop the dome is a copper statue of Winged Victory (by sculptor Giovanni Mayer); at the foot of the lighthouse is the anchor of the destroyer Audace, the first Italian ship to dock in the port of Trieste in 1918 which gave its name to the Audace pier. At the entrance are two shells from the Austrian battleship Viribus Unitis.
