Trieste, administrative centre of the region of Friuli Venezia Giulia, has always been a border city with an international atmosphere due to its position on the northernmost part of the Adriatic Sea, overlooking the Gulf of Trieste, near the border with Slovenia.
Positioned on the water, piazza dell’Unità d’Italia is encircled by buildings in neo-classical and Viennese styles including: palazzo del Governo, now housing the Prefecture; palazzo Stratti with the long-established caffè degli Specchi; the Town Hall with its bell tower and fountain of the continents; and the Lloyd Triestino building, seat of the regional government.
The 14th Cathedral of St. Just, with mosaics, splendid Gothic rose window and bell tower, rises overs the historical centre. Close by are the ruins of the Castle of St. Just and the older structures of the arch of Richard and the Roman Theatre which is now used for entertainment purposes.
The port of Trieste, Italy’s main commercial harbour, covers a vast area. It includes the Old Port which extends from the entrance of the Grand Canal to the neighbourhood of Barcola and has five docks with dozens of warehouses and hangars.
The imposing Vittoria lighthouse, a monument dedicated to those who died on colle Gretta in WWI, and elegant Miramare Castle overlooking the sea and surrounded by a large garden, can be found just outside the city.
