The Montasio plateau, of Karst origin, stretches 1,500 / 1,600 m above sea level at the foot of the southern face of Friuli Venezia Giulia’s third highest mountain, Jôf di Montasio.
Its shape and quaternary deposits suggest that its landscapes and river runs were very different in the past. The plateau is abruptly interrupted by a deep incision produced by the Raccolana stream; a sheer drop of over 800 meters that has generated a landscape that is geomorphologically unique in the Region.
The plateau is the largest mountain pasture area in Friuli Venezia Giulia and source of the well-known, namesake cheese.
