The Pani basin, located on a splendid plateau at 900m above sea level, is a hidden jewel protected by the mountains, enclosed by the territories of Ampezzo, Socchieve and Raveo: an inner valley that can only be seen after the fork that marks the entrance. The view is spectacular, featuring gentle slopes and meadows dotted with traditional stables, some in ruins. The few inhabitants here lead a serene and austere life.
The town of Pani is nestled in a sunny valley on the slopes of Col Gentile. Considered one of the most authentic villages in Italy, Pani can be reached from the small village of Raveo in Carnia, famous for its S-shaped biscuits. Ending the climb at the Pani fork (1,139m), the descent leads steeply down to Voltois, a picturesque village with ancient houses featuring arches and flower-decked balconies.
