Gradisca d'Isonzo (Gorizia), considered one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, is a 15th century fortress built on the right bank of the Isonzo river by the Republic of Venice, with input from Leonardo Da Vinci, to defend from Saracen invasions. Inside the Venetian walls is a castle whose main nucleus is the Palazzo del Capitano.
The streets of the old city feature the 15th century house of the Venetian Superintendents, and Palazzo Torriani, which houses the City Documentary Museum and the Luigi Spazzapan Contemporary Art Gallery. The theatre stands on the main square and numerous historic cafés can be found in the arcades.
