The Isonzo river begins in Slovenia and, pushing through canyons and forests, moves into Gorizia across the karst plateau, taking its emerald green water to the villages of Gradisca d'Isonzo, Sagrado, Fogliano Redipuglia and, 136 km later, pours into the Adriatic Sea near Grado.
Its course is scattered with the remains of ancient castellieri (fortified boroughs), traces of the populations that have ventured into the territory over the centuries: Romans, Lombards, and Byzantines, medieval castles and Venetian and Austrian fortresses.
