Monrupino is a typical Karst plateau village.
The town is dominated by the fortress: originally an important prehistoric hillfort, it was then a Roman castrum and later a fortress to defend against Ottoman raids. The church dedicated to Our Lady of the Assumption, which later became a sanctuary, was built in 1512. The Rocca offers a view of the entire gulf of Trieste.
Every two years at the end of August, the "Karst wedding" is celebrated, following an ancient, evocative Slovenian ritual, with a rich cultural and food and wine programme.
Rupingrande is a 19th century Karst house, now museum, that preserves all the typical architectural features of the rural tradition of the Karst plateau. The use of stone in its building and ornamental features is a characteristic of the area.
