The Battiferro is an important hydraulic system in Bologna that allowed boats coming from the sea to navigate the difference water levels of the Navile canal and reach the city. Originally built in wood, it was designed by Pietro Brambilla, later constructed in masonry by Vignola in 1548 and modified several times.
The term Battiferro refers to an ancient factory used for beating iron and copper. On the right bank are the remains of a rice mill and a brick kiln and on the left Bologna’s first hydrothermal power plant (1901) and the former Galotti furnace complex, now a museum.
