Cavaticcio park in Bologna was created in 1983 using land that lies above a covered branch of the Reno canal known as the Cavaticcio.
The Cavaticcio canal featured a notable difference in water level (about 15 meters) between the branch point on the Reno canal and the former port of Bologna. This generated a violent flow of water that gave it the nickname Scavezzacollo or Fiaccacollo in the 14th century, in both cases referring to the speed of the water of the fall (one was also used for a stretch of the current Via Rialto, where a branch of the Savena canal flowed uncovered).
