Matajur, also called mount Re and Baba in the local Slovenian dialect, is a mountain in the Julian Prealps, 1,641 m high. It is located in the eastern part of Friuli and overlooks the city of Cividale.
Despite its limited height, the mountain is easily identifiable from the Friulian plain because of its characteristic conical shape and is the most representative relief in the valli del Natisone and their symbol.
The mountain slope, covered by woods (poplars, chestnut trees, green alders) and meadows to the summit, is not particularly difficult to climb. On the summit is a small church, dedicated to Christ the Redeemer, built on the ruins of a chapel inaugurated in 1901 (to commemorate 19 centuries of Redemption), first struck by lightning and then destroyed by events related to the battle of Caporetto.
The summit offers a magnificent panorama that features Carso, Istria, the Grado lagoon and the peaks of Canin, Mangart, Tricorno, Monte Nero and the Dolomites.
