Not far from the city of Salerno, the Pertosa-Auletta Caves, are the only speleological site in Europe where it is possible to navigate an underground river, the Negro river, and come across an underground waterfall. The result of Nature’s ceaseless and intense activity for the past 35 million years, the caves stretch out for about 3,000 m2 in the Monti Alburni, in a maze where every space is decorated with stalactites and stalagmites of different shapes, sizes and colours.
The cave, which was inhabited in the Stone age, as shown by the remains of Neolithic and Eneolithic pile dwellings, was used as a place of worship by the Greeks and the Romans. In the Christian era it was consecrated to the Archangel Michael.
