Gelsomina, the eldest of 4 sisters, is 12 years-old and both looks after her younger sisters and works in a family that makes a living from the honey they produce and what the countryside has to offer. The film is set in Umbria, but the sets used were built in sunny Tuscany in the Grosseto countryside, more specifically in Sorano.

While Papa Wolfgang tries to preserve the only world he knows from the invasion of herbicides, new production methods and the eternal need for money, stubbornly keeping his little kingdom cut off from the rest of the world, modernity is invading from the city, and it wears the face of a game show and a white fairy promising a ton of money.

It’s when taking a break from work that Gelsomina, in the company of her sisters, is struck by Milly Catena, a TV presenter with hair as white as foam, who is shooting an advert for her new television programme, which awards the most “traditional” family, in Bagni di San Filippo (in Val d’Orcia, in the province of Siena).
The television programme will be filmed at the burial ground of the island. Bisentina island, that is, which is part of the municipality of Capodimonte, on lake Bolsena, while the burial ground used for the shoot is actually located in Sovana, in the province of Grosseto.
