Lake Bolsena, near the Umbrian and Tuscan in northern Lazio, was formed over 300,000 years ago after the caldera collapse of several volcanoes in the Monti Volsini chain. The biggest lake of volcanic origin in Europe, it is the fifth largest terrestrial body of water in Italy.
Interesting residential centres on its shore include Bolsena, Montefiascone, Marta with its fishing harbour, Capodimonte, Valentano, Gradoli, Grotte di Castro.
There are two islets on the lake: Isola Bisentina and Isola Martana: the first, and largest, holds architectural jewels at risk like the Renaissance Church and Convent of Saints James and Christopher.
