La dolce villa is a romantic comedy, made in the USA, produced for Netflix and directed by Mark Waters. The screenplay, co-written by Elizabeth Hackett and Hilary Galanoy, tells the story of a successful businessman, Eric Field (Scott Foley), who comes to Italy to stop his daughter Olivia (Maia Reficco) from squandering her life savings by restoring a ruined villa purchased for €1. Fate however has different plans in store and will lead him to change his mind about life, love, even an old house in ruins.
Filming took place for two weeks (April 3 to 15, 2024) in Val d'Orcia, province of Siena: the historic centre of San Quirico d'Orcia, the spa village of Bagno Vignoni and some private locations, Pienza, San Giovanni d'Asso, Montalcino train station, piazza Grande and Palazzo del Capitano in Montepulciano.
While the story is set in an imaginary village (“Montezara”) in the countryside of Southern Tuscany, the villa of the film’s title is actually Torrino dei Gelsi, an agriturismo located in San Gregorio da Sassola, near Tivoli (just north of Rome). The villa interiors were built at Cinecittà Studios, Rome.
