Italy is represented by Monteriggioni, the Medieval town made famous by Ezio Auditore’s saga in Assassin’s Creed II and Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood. The military architecture of the small Tuscan town allows the developers of Stronghold to apply the mechanics of the real-time strategy genre to perfection. The map features the outer walls of the town, but adds two features that aren’t there in real life: the fortified tower in the centre of the town and the water-filled moat around the walls. In its place, historical sources mention ‘Carbonaie’, trenches filled with charcoal surrounding the walls that were lit when the town came under siege.

An expansion for Stronghold which, as well as fixing some of the bugs in the standard version, adds new maps to Siege Mode. The structure of the game remains unchanged, although the developers have strengthened one of the best aspects of the game, the management of sieges on Medieval castles.
