George Lucas used two units to make the sixth film in the saga. The first, directed by Lucas himself, worked on the 67 sets built inside the 20th Century Fox Studios in Sydney, Australia. The second unit went around the world to capture some of its most unusual settings: Phuket (Thailand) and Guilin (China) gave life to the Planet Kashyyyk, the Grindelwald mountains (Switzerland) to the Planet Alderaan, while the burning planet Mustafar was created by using images of Mount Etna, province of Catania, Sicily.
In 2002, producer Rick McCallum and cinematographer Ron Fricke headed to Etna in Catania to film an ongoing volcanic eruption, one of the most destructive in contemporary memory. Images were captured on both the Southern and the North-Eastern slopes of the volcano and cleverly intertwined with special effects and green screen to provide the setting for the final scenes of the battle between Anakin and Obi-Wan Kenobi. Backdrop to their decisive duel are the volcano’s violent explosions, representing the confusion deep in the soul of Anakin who is destined to be seriously wounded by the lava and to become a servant of the dark side of the force forever.
