Based on the 1897 play by Edmond Rostand, Joe Wright’s film adaptation of Cyrano de Bergerac is set in Sicily, in many places inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The beautiful Baroque architecture of Noto is the setting for various scenes: Cyrano (Peter Dinklage) and Roxanne (Haley Bennett) meet in the shadow of the city’s Cathedral. The concave façade of the Church of Montevergine which closes via Nicolaci in a very scenic manner is the perfect setting for several parts of the film. Palazzo Castelluccio, a noble palace built in the second half of the 1700s, lends its rooms to Roxane’s home. Other scenes feature Palazzo Ducezio and corso Vittorio Emanuele, the area around the Church of San Francesco all’Immacolata and other streets and buildings in the centre.
Several scenes were set in the Church of San Matteo in Scicli where a loggia was built along with an imposing set piece on the parvise, and in the surrounding alleyways. The production also went to Syracuse to use imposing Maniace Castle on the island of Ortigia for the cadets’ training, and to Palazzo Biscari in Catania.
