Luca Miniero took inspiration from the Swedish film Kops (2001) for the miniseries Cops, changing the setting and moving it to sunny Salento between Nardò, Galatina, Acaya and San Vito dei Normanni.
Apulia, a small village on the outskirts of Lecce, whose entrance sign proclaims it to be “the calmest village in Italy”, was shot in the fortified medieval borgo of Acaya (hamlet of Vernole) and its castle. This is where Tonino (Dino Abbrescia) has his hamburger and sandwich stand, a regular stop for the police officers on lunch break. The streets and squares of the village are those of Nardò. Its heart is piazza Salandra with the Baroque guglia dell’Immacolata (spire of the Virgin Mary) at its centre: the old University building served as the Police station. The police drive with sirens blaring along piazza Pio X, dominated by the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta. In the countryside around Nardò, gunfightstake place in the olive grove surrounding Masseria Brusca. Torre Inserraglio, which gives its name to a seaside area on the Ionian Sea in the Nardò area, is the setting for a kidnapping.
Another invented place is Perdiviva, actually San Vito dei Normanni, in Upper Salento, known in the film as the “village of rice, potatoes and mussels”: piazza Leonardo Leo in the historical centre is the setting for the restaurant belonging to the dangerous criminal Anaconda.

No crimes are being committed in Apulia so the local police station is scheduled for closure. In order to keep their jobs and avoid being transferred, the police officers themselves organize crimes in the city.
