Some nights on a ward can be intense, hectic, tense: anything goes to save a life. Some nights. Other nights, however, are just… hot and boring. On a night like the latter, in mid- August, two cynical, lazy nurses, Angelo (Carlo Buccirosso) and Salvatore (Lino Musella), find themselves at Mr. Caputo’s bedside. Angelo thinks the man will not survive the night while Salvatore claims he will make it. “What if we bet our Christmas holidays on it?” A handshake and the game is on. This marks the start of a series of incredible events, including underhanded behaviour blows, stoned chief physicians, out-of-control patients, escaped prisoners, wives and lovers crossing paths, all while the clock ticks and dawn approaches. A night when anything can happen, in a very dark, engaging comedy where everyone plays dirty. Even with life.
La scommessa – Una notte in corsia by Giovanni Dota is set entirely in the corridors and rooms of an old hospital in Naples: it was filmed in the former Carlo Forlanini hospital in Rome (Portuense). The structure, built between 1930 and 1934, was closed permanently in 2015.

Some nights on a ward can be intense, hectic, tense: anything goes to save a life. Some nights. Ferragosto (ndr. Italy’s biggest national holiday) in a desolate Neapolitan hospital. Two nurses, Angelo and Salvatore, are on duty when Mr. Caputo is admitted in a very serious condition. Experienced Angelo takes one look and realises that the man will not survive the night. Salvatore, who cannot stand Angelo, decides to bet the opposite. The prize is the Christmas holidays: the winner will get vacation for the most coveted period of the year. Angelo accepts the challenge. The night is spent with Salvatore attempting to keep Mr. Caputo alive and Angelo trying to play dirty to win the bet. It’s a night when anything can happen: with underhanded behaviour, cocaine-addicted chief physicians and shady characters wandering the hospital.
