A Rome in the thrall of chaos, corruption and cynicism, asphyxiated by scorching heat, devastated by fires and submerged in the darkness of numerous blackouts. This is the Rome of Stefano Sollima’s Adagio, the director’s return to the capital after Romanzo criminale and Suburra where he explores the criminal side of the city with wide shots, the characters backlit. Locations included Tiburtina station, Forlanini hospital, piazza Ara Coeli, piazza del Gesù, largo Argentina.
“Rome has changed over the years and so have I", the director explains with regards to his take on the city. "I see it with different eyes, returning to the crime scene with a different pace, adagio, slowly. After my experiences abroad and a prolonged absence, I wanted to talk about the city I missed. Some of the dramaturgical and visual elements might seem dystopian, but actually, they are not at all when living in Rome. It is obviously transfigured, as it should be: the natural elements are functional to the plot, but while we were writing there actually were fires and blackouts. It sounds like science fiction but it's a part of the city I experience".
