Girasoli, Catrinel Marlon's first work, takes a different focus on madness and mental asylums to how these issues are usually portrayed. Set in the early Sixties, it is the story of an impossible love, born by chance within the walls of a psychiatric hospital, between Anna (Mariarosaria Mingione), a nurse on the juvenile ward, and Lucia (Gaia Girace), a patient. The story was filmed in Rome, the location for the psychiatric hospital (named in the film after Saint Teresa of Lisieux) was the former Forlanini hospital.
Against the backdrop of the often tense struggle between Dr. Marie (Monica Guerritore), firmly convinced that experimental treatments will help Lucia’s schizophrenia, and rigid Dr. Oreste (Pietro Ragusa), who cleaves to the traditional methods for the care and management of the mentally ill, the relationship between Anna and Lucia deepens, forcing them to make decisive choices for their respective lives.
