The Carlo Forlanini hospital in Rome – now disused – was the largest lung disease hospital in the world, focussing on tuberculosis in particular. The structure has been closed since 2015, its functions transferred to the nearby San Camillo-Forlanini hospital on circonvallazione Gianicolense and Lazzaro Spallanzani hospital on via Portuense.
The sanatorium, dedicated to doctor Carlo Forlanini who invented artificial pneumothorax, was built between 1930 and 1934 and covers an area of 280,000 sqm. The imposing building has a horseshoe plan and was structured to provide bright and airy rooms for approximately 2000 patients. A long balcony allowed patients to move between rooms enjoying the open air.
The complex was conceived as a city, equipped with clinics, laboratories, an anatomical observatory, a school, a radio station, a theatre, a cinema, reading rooms and two churches.
