The Francesco Cilea Municipal Theatre, named after the Calabrian composer, is located on corso Garibaldi in Reggio Calabria, facing Palazzo San Giorgio. Built in approx. 1931 to a project designed by engineers Domenico De Simone and Carlo Laviny, it was extended following WWII and today has an external structure that deliberately incorporates classical architectural lines.
Inside, an elegant foyer leads to the heart of the building: a 19th century style, horseshoe-shaped hall with three rows of boxes including a central royal box. Seating 1,500, it is the biggest theatre in Calabria.
The first floor also houses the Civic Gallery of Reggio Calabria, which conserves paintings from the old city museum by artists including Antonello da Messina, Mattia Preti and Renato Guttuso, and several marble busts.
