Designed by Paolo Portoghesi and inaugurated in 2002, the Politeama theatre, one of the most modern in Italy, is located in the historical centre of Catanzaro, in the area where the now-demolished cinema-theatre “Politeama Italia” once stood.
The modern façade, with its concave and convex shapes, is embellished by a fountain on the front steps. The main hall measures 500 sqm and has the classic horseshoe-shape typical of Italian theatres. It has 5 rows of boxes that can seat up to 550 people, plus stalls with a 380-seat capacity. The 22m long stage has modern equipment: two galleys, five lighting rigs, six scenery rigs and a lifting system to facilitate moving scenic material.
