Bagnara Calabra (province of Reggio Calabria) is positioned on the sea between the spurs and bays of the Viola coast, between the hills of the Aspromonte range and the Tyrrhenian sea, a few kilometres from the strait of Messina. Its residential centre overlooks the sea and the lower part of the city with the Marina, with neighbourhoods on the hillside rising up to 600m in altitude, creating a type of amphitheatre facing the water.
The key area is the historical centre, buzzing with businesses, activities and hotels, which features the Church del Carmine, one of the most ancient buildings in the town, the Church of the Rosary and the Ruffo Ducal Castle (also Emmarita), on the rock of Marturano. The noteworthy Ruggiero tower (or Capo Rocchi) with a diameter of 7m offers a view of the strait of Messina while, according to local tradition, the Garibaldi fountain quenched the thirst of the famous general.
Other hamlets include: Solano inferiore, famous for its precious wood and Bourbon fountain; Pellegrina, with its beautiful panorama and ancient Petrara trail; and Ceramida, specialised in production of artisanal pottery.
