Founded in 1968, the University of Calabria (UniCal) is located in a green landscape of over 200 hectares on the hills of Arcavacata, a hamlet of the municipality of Rende (province of Cosenza), and extends along a 2km pier which has an armoured cement structure, a vehicle lane and a pedestrian footpath and crosses the Crati river valley.
The Campus was designed by Vittorio Gregotti, winner of an international tender, and its cubic buildings (departments, offices, laboratories, halls, libraries, cinemas and theatres) stretch along both sides of the walkway.
In the surrounding hills are the university residences, sporting centres, refectories and social places. Towards the valley is the “Polifunzionale”, the original teaching and faculty area of UniCal.
The university campus also comprises the Natural History Museum of Calabria and the Botanical gardens.
