Located on the southern end of the Promontory of Circeo in the municipality of San Felice Circeo (LT), Torre Fico was built in 1562 by the Caetani family as part of a defensive system against the frequent raids by Saracen pirates. Its name probably derived from the abundant prickly pear plants (fico d’india) which still cover the rocky spur where the Tower is situated today.
The tower offers an excellent observation point over the Southern coastline and the Pontine Islands. It can be reached on foot from the harbour with a walk through the Mediterranean undergrowth, or by car from the residential centre.
