Torre Astura is an artificial fortified islet positioned 10km south of Nettuno (RM) at the height of the mouth of the River Astura. The structure is connected to the mainland by a small bridge with several arches that spans an underwater archaeological site which features the ruins of a Roman villa and its fish farm. Built on the site of Roman ruins as a defence from the Saracens, the fortress was transformed into a castle and expanded to its present size by the Colonna family who took possession of it in 1496. The pentagonal tower, one edge jutting out towards the sea, that gives the structure its name actually occupies only a fifth of what was the surface area of the entire fortress, of which some merlons still remain.
The tower is located in large wooded area of coastline, covered mostly with undergrowth, and a pine forest. It offers a view from Anzio to the Promontory of Circeo; a swampy area that was drained in the 1930s.
