The Regional Nature Reserve of Tor Caldara rises on a strip of land, 44 hectares saved from urbanization, between Anzio (RM) and its hamlet Lavinio. The Tower that gives the reserve its name was built in the 1500s on the highest point (approx. 15m) of a coastal promontory to serve as a lookout for Saracen pirates. Today it guards fossil dunes filled with European bee-eaters and the plain like area that spreads out behind, covered with Mediterranean undergrowth.
