Isola Superiore, better known as Isola dei Pescatori (Fishermen’s Island) in evocation of the principal occupation of its residents, is the smallest of the Isole Borromee in Lake Maggiore and the only one that is stably inhabited. It contains a small borgo with a few dozen inhabitants, with a small square bounded by narrow alleyways and colourful houses that extend upwards to make best use of the available space, with long balconies for drying fish. The parish church, dedicated to San Vittore, dates to the 11th century: its bell tower rises over the red roofs of the houses while behind lies the small cemetery where many fishermen were laid to rest with tombstones featuring small model boats. Given the small size, the island can be explored on foot: there are two main roads, one leading to the borgo and the other tracing the island coastline.
