The Isola Bella, located in Lago Maggiore 400m off the shore of Stresa (VB), is part of the group known as the Borromeo Islands and is still privately owned by the family today. It is almost entirely occupied by Palazzo Borromeo, commissioned by Charles III Borromeo in 1632 for his wife Isabella and by its Italian gardens, completed in 1671 by his heir Charles IV Borromeo. The entire island was restructured to make it into a fantastic ship. Part of the Palace is open to the public and the reception rooms, rooms on the piano nobile, caves and botanical gardens can all be visited.
