The Gorge of Castellaneta (or the Great Gorge) in the province of Taranto extends about a dozen kilometres, reaching a width of about 300m and a depth of 140m. It has steep, almost vertical walls and is full of archaeological and historical discoveries, caves and rocky dwellings.aeological and historical findings, as well as being full of caves and rocky dwellings.
Castellaneta is one of the most picturesque gorges in Terra delle Gravine due to the variety and size of its ecosystems. It begins near the Renella railway bridge, north-east of Castellaneta, alongside an artificial canal created to collect water from the Lummo Canal, and continues southwards to where the Santo Stefano and Coriglione gorges develop. Flanked on either side by flat plains used for farming, the areas of spontaneous vegetation currently coincide almost exclusively with the edge of the gorge itself. The area has been protected since 1987 with special reserves, and procedures are currently underway to establish the Park of the Gravine, which will stretch across the provinces of Taranto, Matera and Bari.
