The territory of Castelmezzano (PZ), along with those of neighbouring municipalities Pietrapertosa, Accettura, Calciano and Oliveto Lucano, is part of the Regional Park of Gallipoli Cognato e Piccole Dolomiti Lucane.
Its name recalls the Latin Castrum Medianum (halfway castle) which evokes its history as a Norman fortress positioned between the castles of Pietrapertosa and Brindisi di Montagna. Today traces of the castle – which dated to the 11th-13th centuries – can be seen in the ruins of the defensive perimeter walls, remains of the walls on the rock, a rainwater cistern and the long, steep staircase carved out of the hill. The residential centre, characterised by staircases leading endlessly upwards, is a treasure box of historical residences, portals of artistic value, churches and little chapels.
Trails, staircases and little stone bridges lead out of town to the nearby valley of Caperrino, with its ruins of ancient windmills built in the drystone technique. A local tourist attraction is the Volo dell’Angelo, a zipline experience available in the summer season, which offers the chance to admire the panorama of the Lucan Dolomites while suspended 400m above ground.
