Guardia Perticara (PZ), part of the circuit of the most beautiful villages in Italy and Orange Flag by the Italian Touring Club, has ancient origins. Archaeological evidence reveals the presence of a settlement since the early Iron Age in the IX-VIII century BC.
Observations of Basilian caves suggest a strong Greek-Orthodox influence around the 10th century. Subsequently with the arrival of the Saracens in the lands of Lucania, the village is destroyed, remaining uninhabited for a long time. In 1306, with the fall of the Swabians after the reign of Frederick II of Swabia and the affirmation of the Angevins, the fief of Guardia Perticara (at the time called Castrum Perticari) was assigned to various lineages.
In 1857, a violent earthquake caused 85 victims and seriously damaged the urban structure. In 1980, after the earthquake of Irpinia, a recovery of the ancient architectural and artistic dimension was planned, which gives back its ancient medieval form to the historical center.
