Located 1,000 meters above sea level, Cavalese is part of the Magnificent Community of Fiemme and is the administrative, cultural and historical centre of the Fiemme valley.
Noteworthy elements include: the Church of San Vigilio, whose furnishings were in part provided by emperor Leopold I and his wife Eleonora; the numerous noble residences, including the Palazzo della Magnifica Comunità, and the civic tower, symbol of the town's administrative autonomy, lining the Dolomites state road 48 in the upper part of the town; and the Pieve di Santa Maria Assunta, surrounded by the large park of the Pieve in the lower, oldest, part of town, which is also the site of the Banc de la Resòn where stone benches are arranged in a circle around a stone table at the foot of a centuries-old lime tree, the site of a place of discussion where the vicar of the bishop of Trento periodically administered justice.
