Cornello dei Tasso is a medieval hamlet, part of the municipality of Camerata Cornello (BG). The name and history of the place are linked to the poet Torquato Tasso and his family, who were invested with the responsibility of handling the postal services by the Hapsburg Empire.
The isolation of the hamlet has kept the ancient structure with its stone buildings, portals, painted walls and church unchanged. Rising up on a spur of rock, overlooking the Brembo River, Cornello dei Tasso has 4 levels of buildings. The lowest features constructions that were clearly intended to be defensive, overlooking the river. On the second level, a covered walkway, over 100m long, connects the first and third levels. The walkway is the symbol of the hamlet and is built of stone, covered with wooden beams and paved with pebbles. The third level holds the houses, for the nobles and the people, while the tallest level is dominated by the Romanesque Church of St. Cornelius and St. Cyprian, which dates to the 12th century and contains a notable fresco cycle including a 15th century “Miracle of St. Eligius”, the patron saint of farriers, with vignettes depicting moments from daily life of the time.
